This simple design was the start of so many changes in my
career as a calligrapher.
While working at Hobbs & Tolley Studio in D.C., I had
immense difficulty in learning the Copperplate hand.
So, in practicing a capital 'W', I began to turn it into a
shape rather than a letter.
It became an abstraction... easier to manipulate. I was
drawing instead of writing;
this was far more familiar territory for me.
This swan would later become the logo to my company,
Gracestone Calligraphics.
